I have just bought my beautiful Yellow kakariki from a reputable seller 2 days ago and am not satisfied. I have been trying to tame the bird however he is extremely skittish (as to be expected) but am concerned with what I have been told so here is a list.
Both staff members told me this:
Kakariki are better starter birds for me
They like to sit with you and are not messy/noisy
They're like 2 year old's
Easy to tame
Not aggresive
(The guy clipped 1/2 of his wings)
The cage is big enough
The best way to tame is to hold him to my chest and stroke him
My main concern is the clipped wings as I have read the wings should NEVER BE clipped as they like to fly
Another concern is that all though I plan to spend most time with the bird outside the cage it seems to small for him to a hive flight
This deeply saddens me as I have read that he never may tame as his wings are clipped and the sellers seemed trustworthy (one a old lady and one a nice man)
the old lady had a happy Macaw who loved talking to us while we were browsing the shop and the man even gave us his number if there was any issues
I have strongly bonded with this beautiful bird and do not wish to seem him go or have a miserable life and this situation has brought me to tears
kakariki are very active birds.. do not like having wings clipped and everyone I know who has the bird has become very upset.
clipping of wings is totally unnecessary for all birds.. it like chopping the opposite legs off a cat otr dog because the owner is to damn lazy to train and keep in a suitable environment..

Rubbish.. of any species kakariki are of avery independent nature.. when they want to have company they will , when they dont they will let you know... unlike most pets, they are not cuddly toys... one cohabits as a friend would be the best description

yes.. most parrots are.. it just a matter of trust and discipline

Not aggressive
If they attach to someone in a household.. parrots can be come jelloius, possessive... and if they want to go do something else and stop them.. they will let you know... IF that could be called aggressive..

How to terrify and loose all trust of ones pet.. be it a bird dog cat or child.
Think about it a stranger grabs a child, then holds them to their chest....really?
Sorry for my attitude but sometimes stupid ppl who should know far better make me angry...
Not all is lost... yes your actions todate will be a set back...
Start with get a cuppa coffee, a good book, a comfy chair, and a bit of apple and/ or fresh mint leavies.
Put your hand in the bottom of the cage.. get it comfortable... do not look at the bird.. ignore it...do not make any sudden moves.
Read your book have your coffee..about 1/5 min 1st time leave a bit of apple mint behind.. not all of it.... leave for a few hrs.. again
The bird wil go to the top of the cage.. you and the hand are a threat...the hand doesnt move.. the apple / mint looks smells inviting.. and sitting in the top of the cage is uninviting
See where this is going? the secret to training (get them to do what you want) is to give the animal/ bird, child, staff whatever a good reason to do something..
Eventually the bird wil reach over nibble bit food... then later put a foot on your hand....it will nibble.. just to see if you are edable, could be hard, a small movement if hurts will discourage hard nibbles..
Thats the start of a good co habitation relationship with your new friend..
In the mean time make good use of the "Quick Search" block on the left
words like training diet cage fly time and just read stuff.
Cheers
