Hi today I was given 2 yellow Kakariki's, because the person who had them did not have a clue on how to look after them and just wanted rid.
he has had them for around 8 months telling me they are 10 month old.
in this time they have never been out of the cage and only been fed seed.
I am sure the cage is too small but I can not do anything about that for a couple of weeks
My main concern is how long would you recomend I keep them before I let them out of the cage? I do not agree with keeping them caged up all the time, but I do not want to let them out and find I can not get them back in without causing them distress
I am not a total idiot when it comes to birds but I have never had birds like this before so any help and info will be very
Let them et used to the environment, ppl around....Spend time simply having a coffee, a book, stick your hand with a bit of apple in the cage, nice and still several times a day till they eventually come down... nibble at your hand.. see if edible and then find the apple more to their taste.
Basically building trust in you and the environment.
Always feed them in the cage, that way when they go out, thats where they will return to to get a feed... or your hand... and have them sleep/ rost in the cage.
Kakariki are far more intelligent than one normally gives credit for a bird of their size...eventually they will decide they dont want to go back when u want.
A trick is lower the lighting of the room .. and for 'security' they return to their roosting spots to sleep
All this and more has been covering in older posts in far more detail.
Make use of the "Quick Search" block on the left... words like taming diet get bird back in the cage cage size _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I never thought of apple in hand job, iv been sat with them on and off all day talking to them myself and the walls, so will try that in the morning
I did give them some apple today, it took a good while but they ended up eating it, I think it was the 1st time they had eaten something different to seeds
Iv been scouting through and found some useful tips,
Again thanks
