I wrote about this yesterday,I put it in breeding in captivity. Which was probably the wrong place. I'm worried about my opions for my male kak I've had for 5-6yrs. His girl somehow managed to escape on Tues 16th which was also my birthday and the male is very distressed about it. We had both since 2010 and the male use to feed her and care very much for her. Now she's gone and he is calling for her constantly, I feel so helpless watching him,he's nearly having a break down. So I thought get another girl but not to young, risky idea maybe with his present mental state. Or second risky idea give him a new lease of life and let him live in a breeding avery for the remainder of his life(not sure about the change of life, though). He's live in our living room his whole life and owned it. The guy with the avery's said he'd have to put him in isolation for 2 weeks before introducing him to his birds(disease, and worming etc). He said he does'nt let anyone come in to the aviary's for same reasons. So I don't feel comfortable handling ricky over if I can't see what he'd be going too. Am I over reacting. The other reason why it a chance for us to go kak free is we have 2 cats this year inside the house, and the last of 3 german shepards passed away (aged 16yrs)last Nov. So we haven't had our lounge room door just open all the time for 5yrs. Keeping cat's out and dogs I've forgotten what a normal set-up is. Advice Please, seeing aviary guy today Sat20th, if I don't get a good vibe I'll get him to sell me a girl for $100 and go that way I suppose. Thanks for hearing me out.

If it was our aviaries yes I would be taking those precautions.. including worming , mite dosing etc.....
I would feel far more comfortable with these precautions which EVERYONE should be doing, than simply mixing them up.
Yes we allow ppl around our flights aviaries, but not into them... not doing so is going a little over board.
We have experimented with best methods to pair up kakariki... and letting them choose results in far better results in the off spring and how they get on.
If u are going to pair up another female, they will mate lay eggs... either way u wil have issues stopping the female laying or have to look at holding flights for the off spring etc...whole new ball game.

Have preventing loosing birds and recovery way back in the forums.
Basically cage house bird should spend time in cage outside to be familiar with the environment, trees etc. This way if get free dont fly up in a panic in unfamiliar territory. Also when they do go free never chase or 'pressure' them.. this is what causes the "panic".
Naturally the will fly up , perch and get directions, and if familiar with the local environment, know where they are.
Next step it to put their cage out in view , and if have a companion, if possible have them in a cage near by. Also one of this cage , spring door rattraps, set it next to their cage.. or even inside, with food in it.

We had a storm rip part of the roof off our holding flight few yrs back....had around 80 kakariki in it.....about 30 decided to investigate the outside world... this was discovered a couple days later... most where returning to the aviary to feed roost at night.. the rest in the trees around.
3hrs the whole lot where back in simply by leaving them to it and putting 4 rat traps on the roof of the holding aviary.
Even thu we could get to within 1 meter of many of them, we did not attempt to catch with a net ....

Having cats.. when we have had birds, including house parrots that NEVER get caged, even when we are on holiday.. and a cat (blue Russian.. naturally aggressive hunter) which also co habited with us...
Cats can easy be trained.. any birds inside the house or in aviaries where not fair game....never had an issue. they would even eat together out of the cat food dish... funny thing is neither actually 'recognised' the existence of the other... Both recognised the existence of any other bird or stray cat very quick with appropriate actions noise.
Someone hold the cat another the bird, then bring them closer together slowly and helps with the cat dish and food there. The bird is generally ok, the moment the cat tenses towards the bird, a sharp low tone "no"
Do this several times a day over couple days...problem sorted.

Thank you for your reply, Husband and I went to Brians place with Ricki today. He took us into his backyard to see his kaks and his setup looked very clean, his birds looked happy and in great condition. Ricki was talking to them and very curious. Brian said ric was in very good condition, I must admit his feathers looked perfect, such rich colour. Anyway I decided to go with the theory that after 5yrs in a house,it was worth giving him a chance to connect with his own type and bond possibly and have a family. Time will tell if it's right for him and if not he can always come home again. Cats are enjoying being able to use the lounge room during the day, normally only aloud in after about 7pm,when rick was very relaxed. And yes I agree Steptoe about how well behaved they can be when talked too. The grey female cat is only 1 year old but really obedient, but the grey/white male would look like something possessed suddenly and make a run at the huge cage, then jump on it. Anyway thanks for the prompt reply,it was doing my head in trying to choose how to go forward after loosing Cindy.

I mentioned our cat being blue Russian....a breed breed for hunting...If a mature 8 + yr old can be easy trained... easier than teaching a ex racing grey hound not to chase and destroy anything that is small and fluffy.. from a slipper to a live chicken or rabbit or rat.
