hi I just need some help desperately I bought my very first kakariki two weeks ago when I saw him in the pet shop he didn't look well he was in the smallest cage ever and didn't have many feathers the owner didn't know his age and said that another bird was with him and had been pulling his feathers out I got him home and he is very bold all across his back he hardly has any on his head and all his tail feathers are gone and he seems to be getting worse I just looked at him in his cage and he is now bleeding across his neck and the tips of his wings he has perked up a lot since we got him but the feathers just keep falling out does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to help the little guy
Far too often people buy defective pets then end up with further issues , vet bills and way too often... no pet.
OK we have over the yrs 'recovered' many kakariki from poor conditions.. in several cases completely nude.
We have also ended up putting down a lot as well....
It sounds like your bird is a little more into the area of where more often than not ....maybe 60%, we end up putting down.
!st thing u need to do is sort for mites and worms.
Use the "quick Search" block on the left for invermectin
U will come across info using vinegars etc... dont go down that route with open / broken skin.. it stings and that would be cruel.
Get into a good diet find a sticky thread "what do u feed..."
Get the bird into sprigs of wild mint, bit of sage and rosemary.
These are natural oil insecticides the birds crush and prune with.
The bird will need alot of calcuim other general minerals.
Phosphorous from broccoli stems... without phosphorus it cant absorb calcium into the body.
Cooked chicken bones and the cartilage in the joints and breast bone... and the iron inside the bones.
Iron needs citric acid to absorb... apples
This all needs to be done as a regular normal general care of the bird.. t is not a remedy then forget...but no doubt he will be lacking all these things anyway.
Repeat the invermectin around 10 days and a 3rd time.
Excessive bleeding.. if happens.. get a few silver nitrate sticks off the local vet... excellent to cauterise
And cross your fingers for the next couple weeks....after a month all going well u should see significant improvement.
We have found, recovered birds do not breed, or at best inconsistent on rare occasions and then usually very low fertility. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
