hi I have a breeding pair of kakarikis and currently have 6 chicks that will be 3 weeks old in a couple of days. we have had no problems all feeding well and growing well. today I heard what sounded like a panic call from the chicks, the male has been feeding them recently but today they were making the sound that sounded all panic when the male went in any ideas why this could happen or is it just calling from the chicks hope that makes sense
Do u have a 3nd nesting box.About thetime chicks just start getting adult feathers appearing the female goes to a 2nd nesting box to lay again....
The male continues to feed the 'old' chicks and look after the female on the new eggs.
IF there is no 2nd box, the female will lay in the same box, but she now considers ANY thing else except the male to be a threat to her new batch of eggs.
Eventually she will attack and damage the 'old' chicks
My suggestion is to remove the chicks and hand raise or foster out.
Chances are adding a new nesting box at this stage is too late... the female most properly has already settled in the current box...
Maybe worth a try thu is remove the hen for a day or so, add a 2nd box where the old one is, and move the old one.....may or may not work.
The male will have nps with the moving of the old nesting box and chicks.
On VERY rare occasions not having a 2nd nesting box is ok... VERY rare. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
