Hello everyone, we now have 2 beautiful Kakarikis that we bought on the weekend. They are settling in nicely, but we can not tell if they are male or female and would really like some help. Hopefully the photos will help, one has a yellow tail and the other more olive colour.

Any help/info of species/hybrid would be much appreciated.

Thanks

They are both male, red crown species.
They are mutations, for further ID have a look in the gallery here

Thanks for your help Steptoe. The pet shop advised they were male and female, I don't mind they are both males, as I love them already. Can you let me know if it is okay to keep two males together without a hen?

Also can I ask how you came to sex them as Male, I would love to know.

Many thanks
Mel

Hi again,

Just another query in relation to the behaviour of the one with the yellow tail. He on several occasions lowers his head and tail but with his rump in the air and makes a chirping sound. Do you know what this behaviour is about?

Thanks again

yep and the prefered option if keeping as pets..
Having a male and female u run into egg laying issues, and dont stop, or chicks then holding avairies to keep the off spring

How to tell, generally the size of the beak.. both are large, on the othe hand every so often one gets a kakariki, swears its a male and turns out to be a female.....

Could be a female...getting ready to mate...
next thing to check is the yellow strip under the wing... male is more faint and broken, the female distinct stripe... their are pics in older posts on the subject.
Cheers
Steps

Thanks Steptoe for all the information, it has been very useful. If I can catch them at some stage I will look under their wings.

Much appreciated.

Use the "quick search" block on the left to tame them....only takes a few days.
one can make out the stripes when they fly
