Hi this question may have been asked but couldn't find an answer. I've had my kakariki hen for 9 months she has only been in her cage which is a big parot one with another hen. I have just bought a cock as one of my hens was showing a breeding interest is the polite way to say it on her perch quite a few times, a day I have separated the other hen who is not interested, will the cock take to the hen? She's very keen on him, thanks for the help.
Do u have 2 nesting boxes in there?
Will they pair up....time will tell
Will they breed .. time will tell
Will there be chicks...good breeding age and good suitable constant diet... yes
Do u have a plan to hold between 4 and 8 grown adult birds produced every 8 to 10m weeks year round?
Something most people never consider till the last minute and just do not have the area , time or expertise to do. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Yes I have two nesting boxes, they have a good diet of fruit, veg and seed as I read about the diet before on a different forum. Yes I am prepared and aware of the clutches she can have my husbands currently on building an aviary. The local pet shop I bought the cock from is interested in the chicks when they are old enough. I just wondered with a cock been introduced late if this would alter any chances. I don't mind if they don't choose to pair as I'm happy with them. They are beautiful funny birds who love to wander around the house. Thank you for your advice it's quite hard finding breeders to ask in England.
I should add , iff the parents have a history of being hand raised u could, most likely, end up with an issue of them not having the knowledge to raise / feed the chicks... so be prepared for hand raising. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thank you steptoe, my only question is now she's threw out saw dust, and wood Chipping's of the nesting box so I don't know what else to try. Thanks again they have been mating 2/3 times a day or more so hopefully some babies will come :)
It's 8x7x13 inches when upright but we have turned it sidewards so she has more room. From the bottom to the hole it has a depth of about 4 inches. She's spending more time around it, goes in and scratches and when shes out the cage she seems eager to be back in inspecting the nest but no eggs as yet. Could she be close to laying? Thanks again
is it possible she won't lay eggs at all, and how do I know if they've mated successfully apart from having eggs? they are constantly mating and the way he looks after her is sweet. thanks again Steptoe I have searched for the answers but keep coming up short.
There is a thread here with picks of different nesting boxes ppl.. how to make them.
basically after a few yes experimenting different heights sizes , boot designs etc
200mm wide 1/2" thick rough sawn pine untreated.
screwed together (this make easy clean later) about 1/2 m deep and think (check the old threads) about 60mm hole 1/2" from the top.
A 1" diam perch (stick) shoved into a hole below the entrance.
inside under the entrance, a strip of wire mesh 'ladder' stapled on a and a small twigg behind to keep off the side
about 3" to 4" of wood shavings (see a local wood turner or wood turner club) or dry forest mulch...
Too big in the bottom and effects keeping eggs together and chicks later.
too short to entrance, and the chicks emerge too early.
And if u are monitoring them too close , espec if 1st time parents , they will unwanted things....and if have had several generations of hand rearing , chances are they just dont know what to do at all. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
