Hi!
I'm confused with some herbs,
Here I got the information that "rosemary, mint and basil" are a good defense against mites etc?
But... on a German forum I've read, that you may give basil only once now and then, because of the high content of essential oils?
And for rosemary it's also forbidden to give it to them due to the high content of oils,
I'm not sure about the mint, I can't find information on it, is it really safe?? I really don't dare to use it now, I don't want to poison my bird.. He is now also getting a treatment for bloodmite etc... so is it even okay to use herbs when he's on medicine?
Use the "quick search" block on the left
We have rosemary and mint around our aviaries, and all the herbs u mention above is included in their veggie diet...
Also look up apple cider vinegar and vinegar as cure and maintenance prevention.
And a thread "what do u feed..."
Lavender I would stay way from _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
It's true that basil contains high amounts of essential oil. And so is Mint and Rosemary. Essential oils are the defence mechanism of plants against bacteria, fungus and mould. In high amounts, Kakariki do not ingest it but spread it over their feathers.
When lavender is in bloom we give it dayly, the seed too. The leaves of this plant are not interesting for our birds but you should look into their eyes, if we do not bring levender one day. The same is with Hyssopus or Oregano.
But we always only give the flowers. You also may try the flowers / seeds of chamonmile, yarrow, mentha, coriander, fennel, salvia, agastachia, dill weed, basil, salvia...

Can you tell me more about why to look in their eyes? ^_^
Oh - o.K it's a kind of saying in german and i-see i can not translate it directly to english. It means that they are waiting for it every day a "must-do" for us. Every day few flowers for each bird, not such great ammounts as shown in that video

Interesting on the lavender...thanks
If the birds want/ need it they will use it, if not they will go do something else.
Herbs oils, vinegar apple cider vinegar, go hand in hand of an essential constant, varied balanced diet that is required for a long healthy life.
Not doing so results in 99% of the problems people come to these forums with... bet it mites worms or just plain run down.
People like ourselves, Peter, Georg don't have issues and some of our birds are getting up to over 15 yrs old... females produced 140 adult birds and the cocks over 2x that.
Much of we have learnt has been from experience over several decades, trials experimenting and sharing information over the last decade or so. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
We always do feed small amounts of a lot, the birds shall choose what they want / need. So we can't say what ist the favoured food to give, it depends on the season and the conditions of life. Mostly they look for food they didn't eat for longer time.
By the way - the ethereal oil of lavender is highly potential in antibiotic use.
