I asked explicitly if they treat birds or not. They said yes we do.

Yep that goes exactly with what I said above... its about taking your money rather than doing what is right...we generally have a lot of misguided trust in our doctors and vets...and lawyers....
And asking a few curly questions often raises suspicions...
Im no diplomatic person(as often seen in these forums) and when such things happen yep I bluntly question their knowledge.. be it a vet, wheel alignment guy on my classic cars, plumber or building inspector...what ever.

Quote:
He also told me to use "pellet food".

As with medical schools and pharmaceutical company propaganda and sponsorship, same goes for the pet food companies, and their influence on the vet community...including vets having stacks of stacks of the stuff on their shelves for sale
There is NO specialist artificial manufactured food for kakariki....
Kakariki are quite unique in their evolution and the environment they come from....
And no matter what animal, be it human, cat dog or bird, nothing matches up long term than a natural as possible diet/ environment.

Too much calcium yes causes bad side effects.. of hand cant rem but is long term and along with bad diets....I have never heard of or seen a bird suffer from over dose of calcium thu... therefor I assume something like living full time on a calcium diet would be required... and of the right form of calcium.

Quote:
so the birds couldn't choose what to eat.

An animal, human or whatever if raised on a natural healthy diet will always choose those nutrients it requires at a given time from the selection available at the time....if the animal did not, it wold be extinct by now if was wild.....so apply the same simple common sense to our captive birds.
To often 'higher education' with many people rules common sense out of their thought paterns.....Ever noticed that those that raise to th top of their profession also tend to retain their common sense, because it is this that they continue to question the common scientific line of thought....
The Einsteins, Newtons would not happen if this was not the case.

Im very lucky with our local vet... who is not by his admission a avarian vet ... and refers any complex issue to another vet some distance away. or consults.
So when I ask for stuff like invermectin, and use on the back of the neck, he raised his eyebrows, and listened...still ad doubts and I got my prescription invermecton.....
Latter when a parrot got into the rat poison, similar and gave me vit k for dogs.....
There are lot of vets around here and took quite a while to find this guy/ practice... and undiplomatic conservations.....

No it is not fair, but the reality is doctors, vets, plumbers, mechanics are human and a few rely on BS and dollars in their eyes rather than professionalism, and far to often dont know the difference... sry thats life

Sry for the late reply... been out fishing.

thanks for replying steptoe! Think I know what you wonna say..
Like me myself, I do am studying medicine.. and I do have seen this issue you are talking about: doctors who are thinking about the money much more than anything else. I do not wonna be this kind of doctor. So generally I am not this fast working student, I even do had some critics.. " if you work this slow you won't earn enough money " I answered " I don't wonna be a doctor for earning money, I wonna be a doctor for helping people". well, he was looking at me, thinking I was an alien.. :)

Anyway, my 3 birds are still doing fine right know. So, think I am going to introduce them some healthy vegetables and green stuff again.. :)
thanks again !

maybe some question (probably the answer is written somewhere here, but couldn't find it yet), I like to submit some pictures ... just can't find how i do this

My 'advice ' to you is get qualified... and the only thing that does that is bite your tongue and give the lecturers what they want.
Then once qualified and having a deeper understanding + ideals+common sense, u then have the freedom to go in the direction you wish.
That is the objective....justifying yourself to these people doesnt do anything towards the objective, often the opposite.
The danger is not letting your ideals be compromised over this period...and that's where so many also become 'corrupted'...

Now if I was told that 40yrs ago, I would have considered doing so a compromise to my ideals......in retrospect, I would have considered my self short sighted back then...and lacking in a bit of bottom line commonsense.

Just a point of view to consider... Wink
