Update: Spree laid a single egg this morning. Because of my long history of working with birds I do know this can happen without actually mating. My concern is that now Spree is acting different, is this a stressful thing for kakarikis? I know my other birds were very resilient and acted like nothing had happened, but Spree is acting very stressed. Should I isolate her, and give her some space to calm down for a day or two?
Peter, do you have any ideas on what the dark band in the crown could be?
If going on the Orange kakariki, which is basically a yellow crown , bit smaller and a orange band across the base of the crown, above the beak, could it be possible this lower section of the Red and yellow crown in effect be a separate section of colouring??? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Birdnerd mentioned a mix of red and green feathers. These are 2 types of feathers. In other species like budgies and/or Agapornis the mask or crown consists of 'ornamental' feathers. In contrast to the green these feathers have no blue-structure. That's why they stay red or yellow.
I have no idea why they have changed but in the world of parrots everything is possible. Look at the Bourke. The only pigment in the wild Bourke is brown eumelanin and only a few feathers are of the 'structural' type(Blue). Today there are Yellow, Red, Green and Blue Bourkes. And they are all made by selection.
If a certain trait appears, you can often select for it. In nature this happens by geographical isolation. Breeders do this unconsiously and make their own geographical isolation.
Beings that you have established that Spree is a recessive pied female and she has this somewhat "unique" banding above her cere, would this unique trait be a "good" or "bad" trait to breed? That is, if I can find a male Kakariki in the united states.
It depends on what you like. On the other hand I don't think that it will be visible in the chicks cause most traits are recessive. If you like the trait you have to breed back a son to the mother.
Thank you Peter.
I have to say I am sort of weary to breed her at all as I do not know anything about her genetic background. I'm not one to mess with the genegics of a species. I just thought it would be nice to have more Kakarikis in the western part of the united states, beings that they makes such lovely pets. With all of your knowledge, would you breed her, and if so, what type of male would you breed her to? Really want to do what's right.
I would certainly look for a male with a nice red crown. About the bodycolor a normal would be the summit. But since they are very rare I don't think you will find one. I think the best to start with is to concentrate on the quality of the crown.
