hi
for the last couple of days my pair of green kaks have been acting differently so iv'e kept a eye on them from a distance and this afternoon i heard the faint sound of a chick coming from the nest box
i'm gonna keep my distance as the hen abandoned the eggs last time so this will hopefully be her first successful batch ... i don't want to distract her in any way.
i was wondering what happens if a chick dies will the parents throw the chick out as i just want to leave them to it ? _________________ thanks brucie.....
thanks steptoe
i just had a peak and there is one chick cuddling 6 eggs .
the eggs were layed whilst she was sitting them because she lost here first 3 eggs "burried then broken" and then a couple of days later she hurriedly layed another 7 ... 4 in the first week then another 3 in the second week.
this isn't how this hen normally lays and i put it down to her laying then loosing them first eggs.
i guess the other eggs will hatch over the next week hopefully _________________ thanks brucie.....
little update the hen has layed her first egg in new nestbox and rarely visits the chicks now ... the male has took over the role well...1 is just starting to get it's green feathers.
thanks lear ... steptoe i have a spare flight but its empty... i also have a flight with two cocks and two hens "no nest boxes" in what do u suggest... will i have to seperate the two cocks from the hens? _________________ thanks brucie.....
to be quite honest freddie i dont know ... iv'e never got to this stage before and im unsure where to go from here .... i can rather house them with 2 cock and 2 hens which are not breeding .. or put them in their own flight once weaned by dad ... or leave them be !
thing is i don't know what the consequence's will be to any of these scenario's as ive never been here before... iv'e been reading up but still can't get an handle on these final weeks
iv'e no rings to ring them and guess its a little too late for that but i do need to keep some kind of record so how would i go about this without rings?
i have now found a supplier of rings if needs be but if there are other methods i can try i will. _________________ thanks brucie.....
you do have another flight ready?
you can let the male wean them off, but if like me, dont like leg rings...have 3 mature males in a holding flight...and maybe other weaned tennages from prevuios batches....when u see the fledged chicks eatting seed, a few veggies, iris still not devaloped, anf the beak still pink...the spare males will finish the weaning.
If you wait till the iris devalpoes and beak goes silver, you can have difficults ID the chicks and parents
and this was my answer which i think u may have missed.

it just got me a little puzzled sorry _________________ thanks brucie.....
quick update ... the young are just starting to get their red crown feathers.
only thing is... they are not all green kaks like the parents some have yellow feathers ... after a bit of questions and research i discovered the hen had the genes but was not presenting it except for her legs were a pinkish grey "must pay more attention"
it just goes to show how important it is to know what you are buying and for breeders to keep check of their stock !!
this kak was the only all green out of the three.
hi pabloc
well all three chicks have left the nest now 2 have a little yellow which was a surprise but all really healthy ....last time i looked mum had hatched the first 2 chicks of second batch will get on with some pics soon been a bit busy landscaping ready for my aviary .... can someone tell me what is the latest i can put my birds out this summer so they climatize properly we had some cold winters the last couple of years. _________________ thanks brucie.....
steptoe i will keep posting how i get on with this .... iv'e spent the day riddling muck to get good topsoil for my 15cm bed for my new lawn ... whilst doing this i had two companions "blackbirds" probably this years as i saw mum and dad weaning them off on the ground a few weeks since.
they got so close it was unreal even tried to land on the handle of my spade while i was a foot away... they made good use of the worms id turned all day and even stayed watching us whilst they had a beak full. the blue tits weaned their young in my back garden this week and i think both them and the blackbirds have started a second clutch which is unusual for the uk as we've had some late springs lately.
hopefully with some strategically placed nest boxes and my aviary up i can encourage them to nest here annually. _________________ thanks brucie.....
