Hi there i am new to this site and a new owner of a 14wk old kakariki, ive had him/her for 2 days now, he was parent reared in an avery, ive got him/her in a large cage and im hoping it is a male as am hoping he will be a talker, ive been letting him out of cage for flying, however at the moment he is a little hard to get back into his cage, but i manage it in the end, when he does go back into his cage he gets a piece of apple for being good, ive manage for stroke his chest and he will tep onto my finger when i put it near him, the person who i brought him from said he was 99% it was a male, can you help put my mind at ease with this please. also do you think i should be keeping in his cage for a little longer to get used to me b4 letting him fly about my living room.
and yes he's a male going off his size alone ... a closer look at his beak would confirm it for sure can u upload a better pic. _________________ thanks brucie.....
As Bruce said...male

Great i'm so pleased you both said male..... i'm well chuffed. Should i not let him fly around my room freely so soon, seen as know ive not had him for long, as for diet he is on a normal parrot mix which he has in his cage all day and ive just introduced a bowl of carrots, peas, green beans, cucumber, apple, peach, plum and grapes to him today, he has picked at it. He has not been out for a fly today but he has been trying to squeze through the bars.

Ive been considering getting joey a friend, ive got a chance of an 8 week old female lutino kak, should there be any reason why they wont get one together...... My joey is about 16 weeks old now..
A friend?
I don't think kak's are difficult birds to match but I do know they all have their own personality. So it could work.. then again it might not.
In your first post you said you hoped your bird would talk. My first kak, Kwibus, spoke Jibber Jabber Dutch.. as soon as i bought him a friend he went straight back to GAK ( General Accomplished Kakariki's)
Do you have the space to quarantine the possible newcomer for a while? Do you plan on eventually keeping them together in one cage? If so, how big will the cage be?
You say you are concidering buying a female.
If they get along, they might wanna propagate. Do you have the time and space to take care of them AND the possible little ones?
Have you read up on female kaks? They can lay eggs non stop, up to a point it becomes bad for their health.
Are friends/ family willing to take care of more than one bird in case of an emergency or vacation??
Lots of questions I know... But I constantly ask myself the same ones everytime I see a cute little kak for sale.
In general a single bird is more affectionate to his owner than 2 birds are.
Jealousy is something to take into account.
Or your current bird could change his behaviour towards you and become very protective of the female new bee.
At the moment I have 2 pet kaks. But both have their own cage to retreat to if they feel like being on their own. Each cage is big enough to house 2, but I let them decide in their own time.
I have 2 young males. One of the reasons for that is not having the time to handbreed in case something goes wrong ( I know myself, I could not let nature have its way if the parents would not be able to raise them)
They get along very well, thank goodness.. but I've heard diff stories as well.
If you decide on getting him a friend, and you would like both of them to be tame, my advice would be to take it slow. Kak's tame easy, even two or more at the same time, but I think one by one still is the fastest way to bond with them.
And no matter how tame they are, they are bound to lose some of it once they have a friend of their own species to play with.
First tame your current friend. Then buy the 2nd and take the time to at least hand tame him/her as well.
Then let the 2 get used to eachother for a while before housing them together ( if thats what you plan on doing)
Let them fly toghether, eat together, play together before letting them sleep together.
I'ts one thing to have a friend over to play/ fool around with.. it's another to have him moving in permanently with you
p.s... you could decide on buying a different species as friend for him.
A Bourke parakeet for instance. Also a beautiful, playful and quiet bird.
Kak's and bourkes get along fine.
Hi, thank you, joeys talking i am still working on, he is happy to go back into his cage when i tell him to, which is great, attached is a pic of his cage. if i do get a female friend for him i was going to put her into her own cage next to his to start with and take it from there, and if they got on then put them together after a while. although im not sure now about getting him a friend after all the questions you put to me....
also attached are todays recent pics of joey meeting my degus...
thankyou for your reply....

Well, i just fell in love with her and just had to have her.... below is a pic of my latest addition this is my 8wk old female my kids called her polly... Ive not put her straight in with jeoy, but the cages are next to each other...
thankyou..... she is such a cuttee..... but am alittle concerned now as the person i had from told me that my joey may not be a male and he thinks it is a female.... but he did admitt that he do find it hard to sex the green kaks, but he sounded really unsure.... so i guess im just going to have to wait and see..... am hoping joey is male though.

hi again, i've put polly into joeys cage today for the first time, joey seems to be pecking at her beak and especially her legs/feet alot, now i have one sat in one corner and the other sat in another corner of the cage, both very quiet.... is this just a case of joey showing polly that he is boss....
it can be that the dont like eachother right away, i understand that you want tham 2 gether asap but you can better take it slowly befor 1 gets hurt.
some birds you can put tham right together and some you cant i have a couple here that took weeks befor the even sit togheter outside the cage when in te casge they allmost killt each other. it took a while but the are in the same cage now hugging
and about the sexing of you kaks if you wanna be 100% sure take a fether of the bird that fell off and bring it to your lokal vet he is able to do a dna test on it
Take it slow.
Kakariki's are very social birds and most will company. However, like you would not want to be forced into liking a stranger, neither does a kakariki.
House them seperatly for a while longer. Let them have supervised play time together to get to know eachother.
Chances are once they know more about eachother, they will start liking eachother.. and who knows, maybe even start to really care for eachother.
Polly is way too young to breed with anyway. So use that time to let them pick out the right time to move in with eachother.
I think that way you have a bigger chance they will eventually start a familly.
