The nest box where the chicks are as a removable top. When ever i remove it the largest chick flys up and sits on the sides of it. Not far behind is Ella the smallest. The chicks will go on to my finger, but ella always climbs up and sits on my shoulder and hides in my hair ( i have long hair). Now what i'd like to know is should i leave the top of in the day and replace it at night, or leave them to make their own way out through the hole thats in the box. Also at what age will anyone be able to tell me the sex of the birds. Thanks.
That lower chick..it is still a long way from coming out of the nest
Th 1st one about ready to exit the nest normally
?It is not a good idea to have chicks wander around on their legs untill ready...the legs , hips , muscles ligament are some of the last part to devaople in a check, pre mature usage can and does cause distoritions as an adult. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Ella's picture shows her legs wrong sorry i didnt realise they looked like that she was on my arm at the time. She stands up ok in the nest and does sit on my fingers ok.
See Jacks Crown? it looks very defined with rhe red, and the colour..almost could be called crimson....thats what our pure breeds are like. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
For decades we had issues of good pure breed stock in NZ
In the last 7 or 8 yrs several of us breeders and small time hobbists have got together and swaped good lines....
Once the 'word' got out we have basically swamped the market with top pure breeds 3rd , 4th , 5 th generations in each of our areas of the country...
And absolutely ruthless with any lines that have any hint of hybridisation. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Jack and Jill were bought at a bird fair at a place called Newark. Its a big show ground ( often seen on the bbc bargain hunt). We just went for a look and ended up getting 8 bengalise, 6 silverbills and 2 kaks. I was very surprised to see so many kaks there, prices ranging from £20 each as mine were to £70 each. Near to the end of the show some of the kaks were being sold for a lot cheaper. One breeder was selling his last 3 kaks for £30 that £10 each. If i had an even bigger avairy i would have bought alot more there was a lot of lovely looking birds. One i did was was the same as AJ but had yellow tail feathers and a yellow collar and its mate was the same.
finches are really nice, lately the goldfinches and greenfinches are catching my attention, but my aviaries are not fit for them (wiring is too large), and they are a bit expensive _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
