w3c to our communty
The plastic whhels they get sick of, the wire ones, they run, yeah we thought about hurting them selves, but doesnt happen...
Take your time intoducing new toys, otherwise he will get used to them to soon...shoe box, screwed up newspaper, a teaspon, and heavy stuff he stuggles with, screwdriver...dont have to spend money.

No macrocarpa, pine ...there are so many, what sort of threes do u have around you?

Quote:
noises he sounds like a little monkey or something.
whatch carefully as he runs around the cage, espec across the roof...kakariki are unique to other birds, they can do it like a monkey, "look Ma , no beak"

Quote:
He goes back to his cage all on his own which is good as I didn't want to have to try and catch him to put him back as it would be stressful for him.

only feed him in the cage, a few treats out dide hand feed is ok
And keep the cage as his security place, dont invade his space with your hands too much...if he attacks or abuses, tells u off,u when u clean it out, thats a good sign its HIS PLACE

If possble give hm time outside, so he gets familar with the local lay out...
This is insurance for if/when a window is left open...he can get his bearings.
Then put his cage outside...his place of feeding and safety to go to.

I'll try giving him the things suggested thanks i'm sure he'll enjoy playing with them he's very nosey! Bless him. Yes he does run around the top of his cage like a monkey he's very entertaining.
He has taken to bathing in his water pot instead of his bath which is quite amusing to watch as its not quite big enough for him to get into and as a result he ends up with a wet underbelly and a dry top half.
He doesn't attack me when I go near his cage but he certainly keeps his eye on what i'm doing wherever he is in the room.
If he see's one of my dogs through the window or catches a glimpse as i'm sneaking into the kitchen he goes straight back to his cage so he knows its a safe place. I put the dogs in the kitchen when he's out as I don't trust them with the bird, don't get me wrong they are good dogs just a bit rough and excitable!

Hi there w3c

i havent hadmy birds long either but have regularly been putting branches in the cage for them..... ive used apple and willow and they love there new perch which is a big fat bit of twisty ivy i pulled off the outside of the house.... there has been no detrimental effects so far :) i also put a bit of rose bush in with hips on n they loved that....

i havent tried fir/pine type trees as was bit worried about the sap stickying them up .... but i think there are a lot of pine trees in their natural habbitat...... (steps...????)

I thought ivy was toxic? I'll not be using it. Theres loads of beech and birch around here so i'll be off to the woods with my junior hacksaw tomorrow I think! Laughing Does anyone know whether passionflower plants are toxic I have one in the house, its not an edible fruit variety. I also have a begonia which is one that grows large cane like stems i'm unsure of the exact variety. Is this safe? I've not let him chew them just in case. I had a quick look on the net and it appears they aren't toxic but it never specifies which varieties as there are quite a few different types of each plant.
He's been sat on my head today whilst I was using my laptop he's getting much more adventurous and was playing with some bits and bobs on my window legde (pegs and a cardboard pen pot) i've only had him for a few days he's an absolute joy.
I live with my brother who was not interested in birds until I got my kakariki, now he rings me when i'm not home with updates on Rhubarb's antics! Haha

Hi all,

I know you have already covered how Kaks like to play with balls but while in Big W the other day I found a packet of "Practice Golf Balls". I placed two in my Kaks cage (one yellow and one white) and he loves them. For those not familiar with them they are the same size as a golf ball but they are just a hollow plastic ball with holes. He picks it up and throws it with his feet and beak. He carries it to the top of his cage and drops it. I have also put sunflower seeds in it when he brings it out of his cage. He rolls it around and around waiting for the seed to come out. Takes him ages and keeps him entertained. I also think he likes the sound it makes with the seed inside.

Cheers
Ben
