sorry i have not posted in a while i,m getting a pair of kakarikis from my breeder who is moving out of the country so she has to reduce her flock from 70+ birds down to 36 so i,m getting her lutino breeding pair of kaks and all babies do turn out just like mom and dad i do have 1 kak i have purchased form her it is not related to the pair i,m getting from her so when they do breed i will keep one male from the clutch question is i want to get a cage for this pair to keep them seperate from olive who is just 6 months old what would be a good size cage for the 2 of them

hi stretch

so you have 1 kike. Now you add another pair, and you have the intention of keeping 1 future sibling.
Just by chance... do you have a small flight or do you have any corner in the garden where you could build a 2mx1m or 2x2m (6'x3' or 6'x6') flight with a sheltered section?
That would be a great solution to keep the birds which are not breeding or juveniles after weaning.

Breeding 100cmx50x50 cages seem to work for most European breeders.
If you intend to use the cage as double purpose, i.e. breed and keep them year round, maybe slightly bigger and let them out for an occasional flight and stretch their wings.

It all depens where you want to keep the birds (indoors, outdoors) and how much space and budget you have.

Take a look at older posts in this sub-forum, maybe you come up with more ideas.

Regards / Pablo

hi!

then I think it's a fine cage for her to breed and stay year round, as far as you give her time outside the cage.

enjoy and don't forget to post pics!

regards / Pablo

How cold dose it get there...keep in mind kakariki do live in snow cold enviroments in the Sth of NZ...cold enough for ponds to freeze over.
They are very tough birds
