Hi all,

Just thought I'd drop in and give a quick update on Cricket the kakariki...

I posted around the end of March about my male, who was really aggressive and biting a lot. I've now been clicker training him for a bit over a month, and he has turned from an monster into a really nice pet. I don't know what it is about training, perhaps it's just the treats feeding, but the change in his behaviour is incredible.

He now flies over when I call him (didn't train that, he's just started doing it by himself), and he's doing little tricks like putting a key in a bowl. It's all based on positive reinforcement, so no bad consequences for anything he does. He's stopped attacking, he's still a little wary about me being near his cage, but that's to be expected.

He even sits on my shoulder and touches my nose with his beak, it's really cute.

If you're having taming problems with your kak, join Bird-Click on Yahoo Groups, the people there are really helpful (and I'm there too, for anyone who wants some kakariki-specific advice!).

Now all I need to do is find a healthier treat for him - he's taking peanut butter, but I can't imagine too much nut butter being good for him! I'll have a search around here over the next couple of days.

It literally took 3 weeks. You can see what we've achieved in 2 months here, plus a video or two of him messing around!

Leah.

Thats amazing!

The only tricks (not tricks really) my kaki knows is that if he sees me with food he says "yum yum"

and when hes tired, he says "bedtime"

Ive found sweetcorn works as a treat as well as anything for both of mine. They always throw all other food out to get at it. Its how I got them to come to me. If I run out of it, when I feed them they seem to look at me in disgust and give me the cold shoulder

Sweetcorn green pea
U will find the treats will have to be changed every so often to work
The food may have something that their bodies are lacking, so that attacts them. or it maybe something new and different...what ever the reason, when u see the response starting to lack, start with a new treat.

Hi, I need help with my Male Kak aswell. He's a good bird but being a 2-3 month old Male he is having random 'angry' moods. We have been giving him his ball to attack so he doesnt hurt us. It's hard to train him not to bite us because if he comes with dilated pupils and making an angry call i just cant help but jump on the lounge to get away from him which to him would make himself look like the dominant one meaning he thinks he has control over us humans which means he gives himself the right to bite us. I have tried pointing my finger and saying 'NO!' in a stern voice but hes not learning.

I was wondering when this behaviour will end and if theres a really good training system i could go by to improve his behaviour and let him become the loving kakariki he is when hes not angry. If there is one could someone please walk me through all the steps so i know what im doing?

Thnx Rolling Eyes

Im going to be blunt here...
People, and animals, what ever dont learn, because the teaching is inadiquate...
"Tried" a term I dispise...
We tell our children to "try and to their best" and what will children do? exactly that "try" rather than actually do their best....we have been brainwashed with the term...
heard the old saying "trying person..." a person who does that, just trys, never actually achieves...

You have answered your own question here...
it is your actions that determine who is the "alpha male" jumping, your body language will tell your pet exactly who is boss

Sry no offence meant, if you are going to be 'alpha male' in control of your home, u just 'do it', no "try" or wishy washy PC BS.

Thank you for your reply. :) I will hopefully watch my actions more carefully and return my kakariki to the one who doesn't have random angry moods
